
This course is a seven week online cohort introduction to Liberating Emotion. This contemporary Vajrayana practice enables you to move beyond stuck, dysfunctional, emotionally-driven patterns of interaction.
In the course you will learn how to:
- Differentiate between regulating emotions and liberating them
- Find an emotion as a sensation in your body
- Separate the sensation from its emotional storyline or conceptual justification
- Recognize intense emotional sensation as welcome and unproblematic
- Experience emotional energy as it arises in interactions without having to express, repress, or dissipate it
Outline
Week 1: Liberating Emotion Introduction to the core practice.
Week 2: Finding Sensation A scaffolding practice that helps locate and identify sensation.
Week 3: Anger Identifying patterns: relentless expression, freezing, withdrawing, and ignoring.
Week 4: Loss and Grief Fully experiencing loss and grief releases clogged energy.
Week 5: Desire and Joy The energy of desire is welcome fuel for Vajrayana practice.
Week 6: Regret and Shame Introducing another scaffolding practice: “trigger stewing.”
Week 7: Bringing it all together, and what next.
Every session includes a small group breakout section, handouts covering the main points, practice instructions, and suggestions for further reading.
Prerequisites
By signing up to the course you are indicating that you have already learned how to meditate. It’s fine to be early in your meditation journey.
Opening Awareness is not the main practice of this course, but it functions as a safety net and a starting point. A previously-established meditation practice—Opening Awareness or similar—is essential for attendance.
In this course, we will deliberately invite powerful emotional sensations, which may lead to anxiety or emotional turbulence! If you think this could be trauma-inducing or badly triggering for you, then the course may not be for you. If you are not sure whether you should sign up, you are welcome to DM any of the leaders of upcoming courses to help decide whether it is for you or not.
We are not equipped to provide trauma support during the course, though we will do everything we can to support your emotional journey as you participate. By participating, you are indicating that you can be responsible for your well-being, and that you are confident you can communicate if and when you need to take some time out.
